Cut at the right height, on a steady schedule

Central Florida grass grows fast for most of the year. From spring through fall a lawn can go from neat to shaggy in a week, and a lawn that gets scalped to catch up never looks as good as one that is cut on a steady rhythm.

Height matters as much as timing. St. Augustine, the most common lawn grass in Orlando, looks and holds up best when it is kept tall, around three and a half to four inches for most varieties. Bahia does well at three to four inches. Zoysia is kept much shorter. A good rule is never to take more than a third of the blade at once, so the grass is not stressed in the heat.
